The Give Back Project I participated in was a group presentation on our experiences in Nepal. We discussed what it was like to be a nursing student practicing in a least developed country and how it differed from Canada. We also talked about topics such as travel costs, what to pack, the events we participated in, and the different areas where we practiced nursing.
I also discussed how skills that may be underdeveloped or underutilized in Canada may be among the most widely used in Nepal. Specifically, advocacy became a very important part of our work in Nepal, and we supported patients, families, and hospital staff in constructive ways. In the presentation, I also discussed how there was plenty of opportunity to learn from one nurse to another. The nurses from Nepal often asked us, the Canadian students, how we performed certain skills and procedures, and then we would compare and contrast each other’s approaches. This collaborative knowledge exchange allowed us nurses to learn from one another in a constructive and supportive way.
