International Field School in Nepal

During my third year of nursing school at Thompson Rivers University, I had the opportunity to participate in a field school in Nepal. This experience is not only a meaningful part of my personal story, but one of the most meaningful parts of my education. I worked at Dhulikhel Hospital as a student nurse with eight other students from my cohort. I rotated through various hospital units and community health settings and participated in outreach visits to rural hospital outposts. This experience allowed me to learn directly from local healthcare workers and better understand the challenges of providing care with limited resources. The dedication, pride, and compassion of the Nepalese people made a lasting impression on me. The experience allowed me to assess my cultural awareness and my interpretation of what it means to provide patient/family-centred care.

This experience allowed me to witness Hindu cremation practices, deepening my understanding of how spirituality, culture, and family involvement shape end-of-life care in Nepal.
