TRU Global Competency Courses

NURS 1830

Health and Health Promotion I : Understanding Health

Through this course, I learned how health needs, development, and assessment priorities change at every age and stage in life. I gained a deeper understanding of what to expect in physical, emotional, and social changes and how culture and customs can influence development. I also learned about different developmental and health theories and how to apply them to guide my nursing assessments.

NURS 3730

Health and Health Promotion V : Health Transitions

Through this course, I learned how nurses use multiple sources of knowledge, including pathophysiology, to understand and respond to clients’ experiences of health and illness. I developed a stronger awareness of how different populations and demographics are at higher risk for certain diagnoses due to factors such as age, culture, environment, sex, and access to care. This helped me better recognize patterns in health and disease, think more critically about assessment findings, and provide more informed, individualized, and holistic care to patients living with chronic and episodic conditions.

Health and Health Promotion VI: Global Health

Through this course, I developed a deeper understanding of global health and how living conditions, resources, and healthcare systems affect health outcomes in different countries. I learned about the risks people face in various parts of the world, why certain populations are more vulnerable, and how exposure to diseases differs between least developed and developed countries. This included learning about environmental, occupational, and social factors that influence health. Understanding these differences is important because it helps nurses provide more informed, culturally sensitive, and equitable care, especially when working with diverse populations or in international settings.

NURS 3500

Health and Health Promotion VII : Promoting Community and Societal Health

Through this course, I learned about the importance of the Ottawa Charter and how public policy plays a key role in promoting health and wellbeing. By examining the work of the World Health Organization, I developed a better understanding of how health promotion extends beyond healthcare settings into social and political systems. In my paper on Canada’s MAiD program, guided by policies from the Government of Canada, I reflected on our cultural views of death and dying and how legislation shapes end-of-life care. This assignment strengthened my ability to think critically about ethics, public policy, and the nurse’s role in advocacy and compassionate care around the world.

HLTH 2300

Interdisciplinary Indigenous Health

Through this course, I learned about the impact of intergenerational trauma on Indigenous health and wellbeing, as well as the importance of understanding traditional healing practices and ways of life. It allowed me to integrate “two-eyed seeing” into my nursing practice by valuing both Indigenous knowledge and Western healthcare approaches. This helped me reflect on my own perspectives and strengthened my ability to provide culturally safe, respectful, and collaborative care that supports Indigenous peoples and communities.
